Bottom Yard Barn
Somerset
Bottom Yard Barn is the conversion of an old dairy barn in Somerset. We have worked closely with our self build client to deliver this highly sustainable and sensitive project. The Mediterranean style courtyard faces south with a full wall of glazing allowing life to flow seamlessly from inside to out. This concept has been carried through to the first floor where a balcony has been cut into the roof allowing light and views into the core of the building. The historic fabric of the building is a combination of blue lias stone and elm studwork. This combination of historic agricultural materials has been maintained within the sleek modern interior of this family home.
This building forms part of the sustainable masterplan for Etsome House and barns. The building hosts a variety of suitable solutions such as newspaper insulation, airtight design, solar panel, MVHR and a district hot water and heating system run on wood pellets. The challenge of maintaining historic stonework whilst producing an air tight building led to some inventive structural solutions.
